BMW Business CD RDS – the most unreliable radio model BMW offered in the 90’s
Originally it was available for E31, E34, E36 and Z3 but it can easily be retrofitted to E30, E32 and others.
This radio has high quality Qualcomm Bluetooth 5.0 module with hands-free function and if needed then for extra 20€ I can also add RCA plugs for the amplifier. The radios buttons are programmed to control the Bluetooth music playback but no display programming available meaning in Bluetooth mode there is AM frequency displayed.
For the music input the AM function is disabled, all the other features will work as usual (FM and CD-player). For activation just press the AM button – the sound quality is crystal clear.
Business CD RDS (CD23) was Blaupunkt’s third attempt to make a CD radio for BMW after Bavaria Electronic CD I & II. But by now it is clear that they fucked up and it is one of their biggest failures. As time has shown it is the most problematic and miserable radio model and anyone with common sense should stay away from it…
Typical issues:
- Malfunctioning CD drive – not reading CD, not ejecting CD, lost communication between the CD-drive and the motherboard causing the radio not to switch on
- FM tuner goes out of alignment and therefore the radio won’t automatically find any FM channels
- Burned out display illumination bulb(s) – some areas or the complete display is dark and not readable
- Pixel errors – the foil cable between the display and its circuit board has come loose and is damaged
- Volume regulator encoder is not regulating accurately – when reducing the volume it instead goes louder and it could also adjust itself randomly
- Illumination of some buttons no longer works – caused by LED(s) or its resistors
- Front panel micro switch and/or their resistor failures – button(s) won’t work at all or give wrong commands (e.g. pressing number button will instead open the tone menu etc.)
- Light sensor no longer regulates the display brightness – the display illumination is stuck on one brightness level and is no longer regulated automatically
- The display illuminates but there is nothing on the display and no sound is coming
This list is long but on my radios all of these problems have been checked and fixed. Nevertheless I can’t give any warranty and can only guarantee that once you receive the radio, everything functions as it should. If you still think this is the right radio model for you then better buy it from me rather than from someone else in the internet who hasn’t addressed those issues.
This radio lacks the CD-changer input. If it is something you need then you would need look other Business or Professional models.
