BMW E30 flush mount radio bracket (for facelift LHD & RHD consoles)

Important: This conversion requires basic tools and skills, the modification is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Most modern head units (including many aftermarket radios) have thicker front panels and will protrude from the E30 dashboard. This flush mount bracket ensures the radio sits perfectly aligned with the rest of the interior – by default 7 mm deeper with the option to increase the depth further by adding washers under the mounting points.

It is designed primarily for BMW radios but may also fit many aftermarket units. Tested and confirmed compatible with:

The brim of the original radio frame needs to be removed to allow the radio to sit deeper. Using a Dremel and files, the modification takes roughly 20 minutes.

For LHD consoles: use the 3 existing screw holes; optional – apply adhesive between the 3 reinforcement ribs on top for extra stability.

For RHD consoles: use the 2 existing screw holes and secure the other side using adhesive.

Cut carefully from behind so you don’t accidentally damage the front visible side.
Use flat file to smooth the cut surfaces…
…and rounded one for the corners, approach carefully from the back side as before.
Careful with the button surroundings, they are fragile.
The bracket will sit on top of the heater control panel (LHD)…
…and computer/clock
The radio will sit 7mm deeper than originally if this lip is removed and the bracket is installed.
With washers or by thinning bracket mountings, you can fine-tune the depth to slightly different levels.
First screw in these 2 bolts holding the computer/clock…
… then install the heater control block and screw in the third screw from behind, that way you don’t have to disconnect the cables.
If you feel moderate resistance then the radio is already fixed, do not over tighten the locking screws or the bracket will eventually bend/break.
