Why the CD43 is BMW’s best CD radio
It was Blaupunkt’s fourth attempt at a CD radio for BMW, following the Bavaria Electronic CD I/II and the Business CD RDS (CD23) – the latter eventually becoming one of the most unreliable and problematic BMW radios of the 1990s. With the CD43, BMW switched to a fully digital platform, resulting in a unit that is significantly more reliable than its predecessor.
Key improvements compared to the CD23:
- More reliable CD drive: better components, far fewer malfunctions, and — most importantly — a faulty CD drive no longer bricks the entire unit, meaning the radio remains usable.
- Extremely reliable FM tuner: failures are very rare.
- LED illumination: eliminates the common dark-display issue caused by burnt-out bulbs.
- Improved display connection: elastomeric rubber replaces the foil cable, solving the pixel error problem.
- CD-changer input and i-bus support: adds CD-changer support and enables compatibility with multifunction steering wheels and the E38 MID (used as a remote control for rear seat passengers).
- Improved sound processing
- Longer display: 11 characters instead of 8.

Compatibility
Originally installed in E31, E36 & Z3 but also fits to E24, E28, E30, E32, E34 and Z1
Installation
Plug & play with correct BMW radio connector. It first appeared in 1990 with the start of the E31 and E36 production and in 1991 made it also to all of the other BMW models (including E30):
Flush-mount radio brackets for E24 & E30 are also available (requires slight modification)
Condition & reliability
– The volume regulator encoder has been proactively replaced (a common failure point on these units) to ensure reliable long-term operation.
– Front panel is fully refurbished: imperfections corrected, matte clear coat applied and worn buttons replaced if needed.

Radios original user manual and installation guide

Shown once when Bluetooth mode is selected. Lines A, B and C can be customized or left empty. Line B text can also scroll or be animated and has no length limit (e.g. BLUETOOTH, The Ultimate Driving Machine, etc.). It can be enabled or disabled in the settings menu.
MUSIC INFORMATION
Track title and artist are shown automatically. It can be set to always on, displayed once or off from the settings menu.
2️⃣ STATIC TEXT (required)
Choose your own text for each display line. Lines A and C can remain visible while track/artist information is shown on line B.
